The Order of Hermes at large was decimated in 1218 after a surge of power from the realm of magic erupted in locations of magical concentration. This primarily harmed covenants of 4 or more magi and was more pronounced in powerful magical auras. Whole covenants crumbled and aged 100 years. Magi either were killed or forced into final twilight as a result of what most survivors refer to as, magical feedback.
Apprentices were typically spared and itinerant magi were mostly untouched as well. Survivors have theorized that having an incompletely refined gift offered the apprentices protection and solo magi or those in small clusters were not concentrated enough magically to be harmed. This event has generally been referred to as “The Magical Cataclysm.”
