1. Who is your parens? What are they like? Where are they from? Did they survive the magical cataclysm?
My parens, Hypatia, is an elderly female magus who is stern, but possessed of a cutting humor, who saw one of my performances when I was a boy and recognized my Gift immediately, even through its gentility. She apparently traveled to the Black Forest from Greece, although why she left there, she never would say. She and I have a strange relationship, as my talkative, moody nature contrasts deeply with hers, but she still finds me somewhat charming, if preferring to keep me at a distance. I have had no word from her since the Cataclysm and the cave that she called home was abandoned when I went there to seek her. I do not know if she is alive or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me if she has taken refuge in Faerie and begun seeking answers there.
2. Do you have mundane family? Where do they live? What do they do?
My parents and younger sister, Leonetta, continue to travel from town to town as troubadours. It’s been some years since I stumbled across one of their encampments to say hello. They have been suspicious and a bit jealous of me since Hypatia paid them handsomely to purchase my services from them and continue my training. They suspect that I now live a life of higher means, that I think I am better than them and the money has long since been spent.
3. Do you have any investment in some aspect of mundane society? If so, what is it?
Unfortunately, no. I would love to find some additional connection to scholarship or nobility, but my lowborn status hasn’t allowed me much in the way of access there and, frankly, even were I to find my way into their company, I’m slightly afraid of what inadvertent offense I might cause. I feel like they might provide me the knowledge or connections I need to further my ongoing education.
4. How does your character view the magical cataclysm? How did your parens, if they are alive, deal with it?
I am curious as to whether this was an act that came about through our own folly or if it was an attack. It is hard for me to imagine that this cataclysm was so widespread and so consistent without also thinking that it was by design. Learning its origin is the greatest story one can imagine uncovering and so, naturally, my curiosity draws me ever closer to it. I have no idea how Hypatia views it, of course, but I’m certainly curious about that as well. She has ever been more pragmatic than I am and that would certainly balance out my flair for the dramatic.
